An innovative research project has been carried out on the company premises of STM Montage GmbH in Lunzenau, Germany: A wind power plant with a lattice tower, where the uppermost segment consists of fiber-reinforced molded timber pipes.

During the final days of World War II, a column segment of the Brandenburg Gate was severely damaged by grenade attacks. When the gate was reconstructed in 2002, the German engineering office of J. Sando in Weimar developed a method by which it was possible to substitute the column segment. The special supporting structure necessary for the substitution process was designed using RFEM.
The sluice gate is based on a pressure segment used to control the water level of the weir. The flap width is 23 ft, the total width of the structure is 34 ft. It is possible to dam water to a maximum height of 18 ft. The structure is made of S 355 steel.
The picture shows only a segment of the entire arena. The structure includes a total of 67 load cases and 6 load combinations. The calculation time of all load cases is approximately 2.5 minutes (Pentium IV, 1.99 GHz, 512MB RAM).
